Why I built this site

I got tired of Googling problems and finding answers written by people who've never held a multimeter.

I've spent 15+ years as a senior technical field engineer in distribution and logistics. That means I've been on warehouse floors, inside server closets, under desks, in parking lots with a scan tool, and on the phone with Tier 3 support at 2am. I've configured hundreds of Zebra scanners, diagnosed thousands of fault codes, and upgraded more laptops than I can count.

The tech sites I kept running into were one of two things: either written by marketing teams who've never touched the equipment they're writing about, or written by enthusiasts who have no idea what "production environment" means. Neither is useful when you're standing in front of a broken system that needs to be back online.

What I actually do

My day job involves keeping technology running in environments where downtime costs real money. That includes:

  • Industrial automation and barcode systems — I've designed and deployed barcode scan systems for distribution centers ranging from 20,000 to 500,000 square feet. Zebra scanners, label printers, WMS integration, ADF rules in 123Scan — I know this stuff cold.
  • PC hardware and laptops — My clients' PCs break, and I fix them. That means hands-on experience with actual upgrade compatibility, not what the spec sheet says. I've found that the IdeaPad 3 17IRU7 has a single 2242 M.2 slot the hard way.
  • Vehicle diagnostics — I drive a Subaru and I own a Foxwell NT809. When a code comes up, I don't just clear it and hope — I actually diagnose it. I've written up my findings on the weird ones because I know other people will hit the same issues.
  • Small business IT — I help small businesses get their tech set up properly: email, POS, networking, backup. Not glamorous, but it matters.

Who this site is for

If you've already read three articles and none of them explained what you actually needed to know, this site is for you. I write for:

  • Field engineers and IT generalists who need practical answers fast
  • DIYers who want to actually understand what they're doing
  • Small business owners who are tired of paying for things they don't need
  • Mechanics and technicians who want more from their scan tool

A note on affiliate links

Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you buy something through one, I earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I've personally used or would use — the Foxwell NT604 is on this site because I've used it, not because it has the best affiliate payout. The commission helps keep this site running without a paywall or annoying ad takeovers.

What I'm not

I'm not a mechanic, though I do my own maintenance. I'm not a software developer, though I can read code. I'm not an academic, and I didn't study any of this in school — I learned it by doing it. Take my advice in that spirit: practical, experience-based, and honest about where my knowledge ends.

If I don't know something, I'll say so. If something has changed since I wrote an article, the Updated date on the post reflects when I last verified the information.
